  • Advancing fall armyworm management in Bowen

Read the details from the meeting
Twenty-four agronomists and researchers met at the Bowen research facility (Department of Primary Industries, Queensland, DPI) to discuss management strategies against fall armyworm. Key insights included current very low FAW levels across the trapping network in Bowen. Dr Ian Newton (DPI Mareeba) discussed a new biopesticide, Metarhizium rileyi, that was promising in trials and they are looking to commercialise. Pupae-busting trials reduced moth emergence by up to 80%. Dr Vivian Mendez reported on their progress at Macquarie University towards producing a more effective fall armyworm pheromone lure. Discussions emphasised the need for continued vigilance, improved monitoring tools, clearer thresholds and opportunities for biological controls. Future priorities include accelerating biopesticide commercialisation, refining pheromone blends, and strengthening FAW surveillance.
