Project overview

With the support and input of Queenslanders across the state, Primary Industries Prosper 2050 has been launched, solidifying a bold and unified vision to grow and safeguard the future of Queensland’s primary industries.

We are co-designing the Fishing and Seafood Action Plan and are currently engaging across the state with all our stakeholders, including the seafood industry and its supply chain, fishers, service providers, local government, education and research institutes and the tourism sector. We aim to deliver a 5-year Action Plan that includes the broader Prosper 2050 vision, but shaped by local and sector-wide priorities, collective action and collaboration.

About the Fishing and Seafood Action Plan

The Fishing and Seafood Action Plan will be a catalyst for collective action that will drive the security, growth and revitalisation of our fisheries and fishing businesses across the supply chain, charting a course towards a viable, productive, profitable and sustainable fishing and seafood sector now and for generations to come.

Queensland’s fishing and seafood sector supports our economy, regional communities and livelihoods. It underpins cultural and social values of significance and provides food security through access to low environmental impact protein.

Your input will guide how we deliver current actions within our priorities and inform new actions into the future. Now, more than ever, it is critical to unite and bring together voices across industry and government to shape and safeguard the future and a shared responsibility for Queensland’s fishing and seafood sector.

We're listening and already taking action

While we continue to work in partnership with our stakeholders to finalise our first 5-year action plan, we've already begun delivering on our Prosper 2050 vision. Here's some highlights:

Modernising the regulatory landscape

  • Cutting the red-tape and streamlining dam and weir development approvals and establishing a Rural and Remote Council Fish Passage Support team.

Co-management and shared responsibility

  • In March 2026 we reopened the central and southern scallop fishery. This follows community feedback, an independent scallop survey co-delivered with industry and the development of a 5-year scallop rebuilding strategy.
  • A $600,000 grant to the Queensland Seafood Industry Association for innovative development activities over the next 4 years
  • Supporting aquaculture, commercial fishing and charter industries with business resilience programs and recovery following adverse weather events.

Trust, integrity and social capital

  • More freshwater fishing with the addition of 3 new dams to the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) on their way in 2026.

Market access and diversification

  • Revoking investment warnings for the State's commercial fishing industry to restore confidence, improve financial access and support industry growth.

Elevating First Nations fishing and seafood

  • Reviewing regulatory frameworks to enable traditional practices and support commercial pathways
  • Partnering with communities to co-design a culturally appropriate and self-determined representative engagement model.
