No. This review will only address the primary production and processing which is currently regulated under the Food Production (Safety) Act 2000, for example, milk and egg producers, beef processors and commercial fishers. The review will not cover areas of food safety regulated under the Food Act 2006, such as cafes and restaurants, food composition or food labelling. The Department of Primary Industries is working closely with Queensland Health to ensure the review stays within the scope of the Food Produciton (Safety) Act.
More regulation is not the intention. This is a review of the existing regulatory framework. It provides an opportunity to ensure the framework is fit for purpose, efficient and provides for emerging technologies and best practice approaches. The review will help ensure Queensland is in the best position to discharge its obligations under the national Food Regulation Agreement.
The review does not intend to lead to more costs to businesses. Fees and charges contained in the Food Production (Safety) Regulation will be an important part of the review. The review will explore options that deliver proportionate, risk-based regulatory approaches while incorporating cost-recovery principles.
This consultation is only the first stage in the review process. Government is seeking community and industry views on potential changes and improvements. All submissions will be thoroughly assessed. It is intended that any specific, proposed changes will be released for a further round of community consultation to ensure Queenslanders are fully involved. This process is scheduled to be finalised in late 2026 or early 2027.
