Freshwater gold clam management in Queensland

Overview

Freshwater gold clam (Corbicula fluminea) is managed in Queensland as an established invasive pest. It has established in sections of the Brisbane River in south-east Queensland. The clam has not been positively identified in Australia prior to the detection in the Brisbane River.

Freshwater gold clam presents a significant concern to river health and infrastructure, and can move long distances in ballast water and through the aquarium trade.

We are working with partners across Australia and New Zealand to effectively manage this pest through early detection and reporting, adoption of best practice decontamination and risk mitigation measures, community involvement and information sharing. The boating and fishing community, aquarium retailers, and local governments play an important role in preventing the spread of freshwater gold clam.

By using this approach, Queensland aligns to the national guidelines for the management of Corbicula fluminea.
