Biosecurity systems mapping in Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait

Project overview

Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait are home to some of Australia's most unique plants, animals and ecosystems. The region also faces some of the state's highest biosecurity risks. Protecting these environments relies on many people and organisations working together, including Traditional Owners, communities, industry, government agencies, researchers and environmental groups.

Each plays an important role, but there is currently no single picture that shows how all these parts connect. To help build this understanding Biosecurity Queensland and partner organisations are inviting people who live, work or are impacted by biosecurity outcomes in Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait to share their perspectives on how biosecurity works in the region.

The project will bring insights together to create a shared, evolving picture of the biosecurity system in Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. The final output will be a publicly available resource for everyone to use. By improving our collective understanding of how the system operates, we can identify opportunities to strengthen collaboration, improve coordination and enhance biosecurity outcomes for the region.

Participants of the Systems Mapping project can share their knowledge and experiences, including:

  • who is involved in biosecurity across the region
  • the roles and responsibilities different groups hold
  • how organisations work together
  • the biosecurity risks, issues and threats being managed.

Get involved

The Systems Mapping Delivery Team are now collecting information to build the shared picture. You can share your knowledge and experiences for the project by either:

  • filling out the online survey
  • talking to a Delivery Team member in-person, over the phone, or online
  • joining a small group conversation with a Delivery Team member
  • arranging a facilitated micro-session for your organisation
  • attending an existing event or workshop.

Any information you can share will help us to build a picture of biosecurity in the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait Islands. There is no requirement to provide specific information - share as little or as much as you like!
